PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION IN

THE OLD MARKET HOUSE, (now known as The Town Hall and Arts Centre )

NEWTOWNARDS

27th FEB. 2009

HISTORY

The Market House was erected in 1777. During the 1798 rebellion it was the barracks of the towns Garrison The York Fencibles. On Sunday June 10th (Pike Sunday) the United Irishmen on their way to Ballynahinch launched an attack on the Market house. There were many casualties. The York Fencibles fled during the night and the whole area fell to the rebels. Their triumph was short lived. Re -enforcments of the Government Forces arrived and many united Irishmen were killed in the fighting. Many of their leaders were rounded up and imprisoned in the Market house cells to await their fate.

Tonights team were Mike, Anne, Gary and Caron. We had the assistance of Paul Whitla a local historian who took us down centuries of Newtownards History. Jean the caretaker told us about how her shoes had been moved in her store room which only she has the key for. So we made a triggger object with them and put in a locked off camera to monitor.

Vigil 1 Boardroom

Our first vigil was in the boardroom where much activity had been reported. Jean (the caretaker) reported how she had pushed the chairs under the table and when she turned her back to do something else the chairs had been pulled back out. This has happened a few times. Another member of staff said that in the drinks cabinet one of the glasses moved on it's own. We set up a CCTV camera along with recording machines and used a book as a trigger object. A well dressed man has been seen standing at the head of the table. Once protection was done the vigil began. A mist floating across the room was seen by two people at the same time. Cold spots were felt at different parts of the room and were recorded on the thermal image. A lady was sensed walking along the landing outside the room.

Vigil 2 In the Cells

The cells were quite small so we split into two teams keeping contact with the walkie talkies. The front cell which is on exhibition gave the most activity. Knocking was heard along with dragging noises. The knocks were constant and on command. The room above the cell is a storeroom and footsteps were heard along with the knocks.

Table work using the glass

We finished off the night using the glass with a yes and no answer. A lady was the first to come through. We learned there are more than 10 spirits in the building. She also told us a spirit was responsible for moving the chairs. Prisoners from the 1798 rebellion are still in the building. She was abruptly pushed out by a male spirit. He was angry and agressive because we were there. The glass was spinning around the table at speed. So fast we could'nt keep our fingers on it.

Summary

We are the first team to investigate the Market house. There is tremendous history surrounding this building. The cells are amazing. We searched the building for evidence of knocking or dragging sounds. Gary checked outside for cars driving over loose man holes etc. but nothing was found. There was no wind blowing. Tonight we did a lot of recordings for EVP and on our CCTV. Once these are downloaded and checked only as Paranormal will they be posted on our web-site. A spirit lady has been seen in the building. Could she be the spirit of Margaret the wife of the York Fencible Commander who died while serving over here and buried in Movilla cemetary. Is she looking for her husband? This place is worth another investigation. Coming soon !

PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION IN

THE OLD CROSS INN NEWTOWNARDS

Sunday 14 th February 2009

HISTORY

The Old Cross Inn is the oldest bar in Newtownards. It dates back to the 1700s and before the 1798 rebellion. In the 1852 directory it is listed as Jack Bailies. The Market Cross built in 1636 sits in the middle of the road facing the Old Cross Inn. This area was a hive of activity as this was the local market selling horses etc.

This is perhaps the oldest part of Newtownards.

Vigil 1

We set up our equipment in the upstairs restaurant placing the CCTV cameras where we felt the strongest energy. Motion Detectors were placed on the stairs and recording equipment for EVP was placed at various places in the room. Once protection was done our investigation began. After a while Mike felt a lady's presence behind him. This co-incided with Light anomalies being seen on the CCTV. We experienced temperature drops at different parts of the room. Knocking was heard along with many strange noises. We felt a male presence but for some reason he was standing back.

Vigil 2

During glasswork the lady made her presence felt by moving the glass. Again using the glass and by using letters we contacted two male energies. One was an employee and the other was a customer of the bar. The first gentleman was Jerry. He was married, his wife was called Tara. The other gentleman was Aidan and he worked in the bar. Both these spirits date back to the early 17th century.

Summary

This was really a good night. A lady's presence was felt in the lower end of the restaurant. She was heard sighing and she knocked the table for us. During this vigil intelligent light anomolies were captured on CCTV. The two male energies were real characters and probably typical of their time. Our work as investigators only starts here. We will spend the next few days going over what we captured and none of us would have it any other way. Please check our web site for tonights findings. This investigation is on going.
