FINNIS SOUTERRAIN Binders Cove Finnis 30 th June 2009
Tonight's team were Mike, Anne ,Gary, Caron, Shelly and David
HISTORY
Finnis Souterrain is locally known as Binder's Cove.It was discovered in the 18th century but dates back to the 9th century.Souterrains are stone lined tunnels and were thought to be a place of refuge for the occupants of the Monastery and attached enclosure when being attacked by raiders. As they are cold and dark it was possibly used for storing food.
The Haunted Tree
On our way through Finnis we stopped at the King James Bar which has a haunted tree across the road from it. Legend has it that a priest was exorcising a malevolent spirit in the village, caught it in a bottle and hid it inside the tree. Of course the tree died but still stands today as a testimony to a local legend.
The Souterrain
On arrival we walked down the fenced access path and wooden steps down to the entrance. As the Souterrain is open to the public the door is never locked. The entrance into the tunnel is about three feet high so we each had to crawl into the main tunnel which only reaches a height in places of four and a half feet. Two shorter tunnels run off to the side. At the end of the tunnel we were approximately ten feet underground.
We did our protection and each of us set off to do our own vigils.
Anne,Caron and Shelly sat in one of the side tunnels with a night vision camera. A little girl about six years old called Maeve came forward and a boy Saul who was about fourteen years old. The Guys in the main chamber were experiencing hearing footsteps on the stones and whimpering sounds. A mans presence was felt. To finish the night we came together for a seance and asked for the spirits in the tunnels to come forward. We had to close this down as one of the team who is very sensitive began to feel the effects.
The Summary
Tonight was really great fun. We spent the night on our hands and knees and walking bent over. It was a great night for team bonding.
The energies we sensed were probably residual although what came through during the seance felt to be more grounded and overbearing. Our team member once removed from the atmosphere was all right. This was a different type of investigation and we have permission to return in the near future.
Thanks to our friend Nuala Hamilton from Banbridge District Council and Hugh Pat O'Hare the landowner for allowing us permission to investigate.
